چکیده

Reflective LCDs (RLCDs) have high brightness and are free from viewing parallax. They also cost less materials to construct and are compatible with existing manufacturing and driving practices. In this paper, a parameter space description of RLCD as a function of polarizer angle, liquid crystal twist angle and birefringence is discussed. It is shown that all published RLCD modes can be depicted in this parameter space, including the twisted-nematicelectrically controlled birefringence (TN-ECB) modes, the hybrid field effect (HFE) mode, the mixed-mode TN (MTN), and the self-compensated TN (SCTN) mode. Additionally we show several new RLCD modes, including the reflective TN (RTN) and the reflective STN (RSTN) which can be obtained from searching the parameter space systematically. All RLCD modes are related by a variation of the 3 LCD parameters. The RTN and RSTN modes have applications to both direct view and projection display systems. Sample RTN and RSTN displays were fabricated. Experimental results show good agreement with theoretical predictions.

Optically optimized transmittive and reflective bistable twisted nematic liquid crystal displays

A new Mueller matrix approach is developed for the design of optical modes for all nematic liquid crystal displays ~LCD!. In particular, for linearly polarized light going into the LC cell, conditions for linear polarization and circular polarization outputs are obtained. By considering the switching between different polarization modes, new transmittive and reflective bistable twisted nematic ...

Reflective twisted nematic liquid crystal displays. II. Elimination of retardation film and rear polarizer

Reflective twisted nematic liquid crystal displays consisting of just one input polarizer, a liquid crystal cell, and a rear reflector are discussed. We first show that all such display modes reported in the literature can be depicted systematically in a series of parameter space diagrams. Then by making use of such diagrams as a guide, we show that other new high quality reflective display mod...

Measurement of reflective liquid crystal displays

Cell gap thickness is one of the most important design parameters for liquid crystal displays ~LCD!. Existing measurement methods only apply to transmittive LC cells. These methods are obviously unsuitable for measuring the cell gaps of reflective LCDs with internal reflectors. This kind of LCD includes single polarizer reflective displays and liquid crystal on silicon displays. The objective o...

Parameter space representation of liquid crystal display operating modes

A parameter space approach is used to represent the operation of all liquid crystal displays. The Jones matrix nematic is used to analyze the static optical properties of liquid crystal displays with any twist angle, cell thickness, natural birefringence, and polarizer angles. All the usual display modes such as 90° TN, ECB, OMI, SBE, and STN can be visualized on a simple parameter space diagra...

Functional reflective polarizer for augmented reality and color vision deficiency.

We report a functional reflective polarizer that can be incorporated into a compact augmented reality system. The design principle of the functional reflective polarizer is explained and two design examples are illustrated. In the first example, with the specially designed functional reflective polarizer, the transmittance of the augment reality system is relatively high as compared to a polari...
